Dinner to benefit local woman’s battle with cancer
PUNXSUTAWNEY— A benefit dinner will be held for Sharon Wright of Punxsutawney, who is receiving treatment for cancer, from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Flashover Club.
The dinner includes spaghetti, salad, drink and dessert, all catered by Luigi’s Ristorante. There will also be a basket raffle.
Sharon’s daughter, Megan Wright, said on March 11, 2020, her mom woke up at 3 a.m. with abnormal symptoms in her abdomen and pelvis.
Megan drove her mom to the Punxsutawney Area Hospital, where doctors found a mass on her cervix.
She was transported to Magee Women’s Hospital in Pittsburgh, where she spent a week receiving two blood transfusions and multiple tests. She was diagnosed with stage three cervical cancer.
Sharon began her first round of chemotherapy and radiation in April 2020.
“At the end of her treatments in May, they ran a PET scan where it showed the cancer was gone,” Megan said.
But in July, Sharon woke up with a mass on her shoulder. Doctors confirmed the cancer had progressed into her chest and lymph nodes and diagnosed her with clavicle cancer.
Since then Sharon has completed her second round of chemo and radiation and began immunotherapy.
Megan said the doctors found more tumors throughout her collarbone.
“My mom has not been able to work since March due to the cancer and her treatments during this pandemic, because it is a risk to her health,” Megan said.
Megan said the funds raised will help with medical bills and finances, as Sharon is no longer able to work and is on hospice because she is no longer able to receive cancer treatments.
