Bre, LV, Cul about to hit the links
The high school boys golf teams from Bremen, Laville and Culver will see their first action of the spring sports season this week. Two of the three have new coaches leading the program. Here is a quick glimpse at each squad.
In-house competition
Bremen HS girls golf coach Jessica Klingerman will oversee the boys team this spring as well. One “problem” she will face is actually a nice one to have.
“We have eight athletes that will battling it out for the top five varsity spots,” Klingerman said. “Most of them differ by just one stroke each time they play.”
Battling for those coveted spots are returning letterwinners Aaron Hawkins, Cory Schmitt, Mark Bahr, and Brett Yelaska. Newcomers to watch for are Connor Hundt, Carter Leman, Joshua Klinge and Seth Libey.
“Our team strengths will be our ability to drive the ball a long way,” Klingerman continued. “The expectations this year are to be competitive, supportive of one another, and flexible with players moving in and out of varsity. We should be competitive in our conference (Northern Indiana Conference).”
The Lions’ home course is Swan Lake and they open there on Wednesday in a threeway match with Laville and Triton.
Cavs improving
Culver’s team returns senior Josh Havron and junior Dalton Powell. Newcomers battling for a spot in the lineup include senior Wyatt Ringer, juniors Hunter Taylor and Dalton Binkley, along with sophomores Trenton Fritter, Rylan Voter and Steven Pugh.
“We have had a very positive start to practice,” said head coach Josh Pugh. “We are working hard to make up for a lost season last
year. Our team goals are to get better everyday and grow into a competitive squad.”
The Cavalier linksters have their first match Thursday at Triton. Two of the bigger matches on the schedule are the Marshall County Tournament (May 8) and the Hoosier North Athletic Conference match on May 22.
Fore for four
Keith Walker takes a step up from the junior high program to lead the Laville High School boys team this spring.
Seniors Jake Rush and Noah Kuskye, along with sophomores Karter Kaser and Kyle Walker make up the current roster.
“All and all it’s a pretty decent team,” Walker said in an interview on the school’s website. “I just wished there was more interest in sports by the kids these days. I started with 11 (players). I guess the upside is I only need four for a team and I’ve got that so far.
“I’m not sure who my top shooter is yet. I know how Karter and Kyle golf because I’ve been training them since seventh grade. Noah is a pretty good golfer. He listens and gets results. They are learning how to work together and by themselves at the same time. There is really no sport like it.”
The Lancers were scheduled to open the season at the Triton Invitational last Saturday. The next match is slated for Wednesday at Swan Lake against Bremen and Triton.
