Suspect shot in Starke County by Marshall Co. Deputies, ISP investigates
The Indiana State Police have been requested to investigate an incident that occurred in Starke County on New Year’s Eve in which Marshall County Sheriff’s Deputies reportedly opened fire on a suspect who was apparently using his vehicle in a threatening manner after fleeing from a traffic stop.
according to ISP District 24 Public Information Officer Sergeant Ted Bohner, just before midnight on Dec. 31, 2020, a Marshall County deputy, who was
in his fully marked police vehicle, saw a red Chevrolet pickup truck commit a moving violation on US 30 at Pioneer Road. When the deputy attempted to stop the truck, the driver reportedly fled.
Two officers with the Plymouth Police Department assisted with the pursuit as it went through Plymouth. The driver of the Chevrolet is alleged to have swerved at several police vehicles during the pursuit.
Authorities report that the driver of the Chevrolet led pursuing officers into Starke County, ultimately hitting a tire deflation device (stop sticks) at the intersection of East CR 750 North and East South Avenue.
The driver of the truck continued down a dead-end section of East South Avenue and turned around, driving towards the pursing officers and apparently colliding with two Plymouth Police Department vehicles and a Marshall County Sheriff’s Department vehicle. As the officers exited their vehicles, the driver of the truck is alleged to have driven towards the officers who were now outside. Two deputies then fired at the driver of the truck, “hitting him at least once”, according ot the report.
The driver was transported to Memorial Hospital in South Bend where he was later pronounced deceased.
The deceased driver of the Chevrolet was later identified as 63-year-old Jeffrey L. Marvin, of Valparaiso. Next of kin has been notified.
The identities of the officers involved were not made available in the initial ISP press release. This is currently ongoing investigation. Any updates will be shared to thepilotnews. com and future editions of the The Pilot News and The Starke County Leader.
