Fall sports athletes might get free year of eligibilit­y

College athletes who play fall sports, including football, will be given a free year of eligibilit­y no matter how much they compete over the next 10 months i f an NCAA r e c o m m e n d a t i o n i s approved later this week.

T w o p e o p l e w i t h knowledge of the decision told The Associated P r e s s t h e N C A A Division I Council voted Wednesday t o r ecommend all athletes whose fall seasons will be altered by the pandemic should get the year of eligibilit­y back. The people spoke on condition of anonymity because the council was still meeting and an official announceme­nt had not yet been made.

BIG TEN: Big Ten officials are working on a revised football schedule that could feature teams starting their season in early January.

Penn State athletic director Sandy Barbour said Monday during a Zoom meeting with reporters that the league could release the revised 2020 schedule within a week or so.

Multiple college football people told the Journal Sentinel Tuesday afternoon that Big Ten officials have decided to start the season as early as possible.

That decision would allow players to finish their season before the 2021 NFL Draft, currently scheduled to be held April 29 through May 1.

The Big Ten announced Aug. 11 it was shutting down all of the league's fall sports because of the ongoing coronaviru­s pandemic but hoped to move the football season to the spring semester.
