Patriots trade WR Demaryius Thomas to Jets

- Wire reports

The New York Jets are getting some roster help from the most unlikely of sources: Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots.

Adam Gase's squad acquired wide receiver Demaryius Thomas from the Patriots for a 2021 sixth-round draft pick on Tuesday, according to a person with direct knowledge of the deal.

ESPN first reported the deal — the first trade between the AFC East rivals since Bill Belichick took over as the Patriots' coach in 2000. The last trade between the teams was actually when Belichick left the Jets for the Patriots, and New York got a first-round pick.

Thomas became expendable for the Patriots when they signed Antonio Brown over the weekend.

The 31- year- old Thomas gives the Jets' receiving group an immediate boost, joining Rob by Anderson, Quincy Enunwa and Jamison Crowder. The move also comes a day after Gase made it clear he wasn't pleased with the receivers' overall performance in a 17-16 season-opening loss to Buffalo.

Beckham Jr. says he will keep wearing his watch

Odell Beckham Jr.'s taking a stand against the NFL on his lavish wrist wear.

Beckham said Tuesday that he intends to keep wearing the expensive watch he had on during Sunday's season opener against the Tennessee Titans. The showy wide receiver believes the league has made an issue out of his jewelry only because it's him.

Beckham feels he's being targeted.

“Yeah, that's just my life,” he said. “If it ain't this, it's something else. If it wasn't the watch, it would've been the way that I tie my shoes.”

On Monday, a league spokesman said there is no rule prohibiting players from wearing jewelry. However there is a policy “prohibiting hard objects.”

The league spoke to the Browns, but to this point Beckham said he has not been contacted.

X-rays on Mayfield's throwing hand were negative

Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield practiced Tuesday and threw the ball well without a wrap or any other type of protection on his right hand.

So May field is preparing for the Browns' upcoming “Monday Night Football” matchup against the New York Jets the way coach Freddie Kitchens expected he would.

“Baker's fine. He's good,” Kitchens said.

X-rays taken on Mayfield's throwing hand after Sunday's season-opening 43-13 loss to the Tennessee Titans came back negative, but Mayfield left FirstEnergy Stadium with his wrist and hand wrapped as if he were wearing a fingerless glove.
