Suspected shoplifter killed by Del City police officer

- Staff reports

DEL CITY — A police officer killed an armed man who shot the officer and a security guard at a Walmart. Police responded Saturday night to a call about a shoplifter near the entrance at Walmart, 5401 Tinker Diagonal. A security guard who detained the alleged shoplifter found he had a warrant for his arrest in Oklahoma County, police Capt. Brad Rule said. When the Del City police officer arrived, the man resisted arrest, pulled out a gun and shot the security guard, police said. The police officer, who was struck in the leg by gunfire, shot the alleged shoplifter, who was pronounced dead at the scene, Rule said.

Police did not release names of those involved Sunday. The police officer and security guard were taken to a hospital by ambulance, Del City Fire Chief Brandon Pursell said. "Our thoughts are with the injured Del City police officer and the security guard in last night's incident," Pursell tweeted. "Wishing a speedy recovery. Also thinking about all our friends at DCPD who are dedicated servants to our community." The officer and the guard remained hospitalized Sunday afternoon with injuries that were not life-threatening, Rule said. Del City Mayor Brian Linley said, "This incident is so unfortunate, and we will keep everyone involved in our thoughts and prayers," Linley said. "We're so fortunate the injuries to my police officer and the security guard weren't worse than they were."
