Yukon students to bring ‘Guys and Dolls’ to stage
The combined Fine Art Departments of Yukon High School will be presenting the musical “Guys and Dolls” on March 1-3 at the Yukon Fine Arts Center.
A full-scale musical production is a yearly event for Yukon High School, and this year involves 129 students in the cast, crew and orchestra.
Under the stage direction of Megan Poarch, the students have brought to life unforgettable characters full of imagination and energy. The classic Broadway singing and orchestration is brought to life with the guidance of Derek Chapin and Darnell Zook using student instrumentalists.
The set construction, props and all technical aspects of the show were designed by Wes McAtee and Tony Travis and executed by students under their leadership. The cast, crew and orchestra involves students in grades eight through 12.
Set in Damon Runyon’s mythical New York City, “Guys and Dolls” is an oddball romantic comedy. Gambler Nathan Detroit tries to find the cash to set up the biggest craps game in town while the authorities breathe down his neck; meanwhile, his girlfriend and nightclub performer, Adelaide, laments that they’ve been engaged for 14 years. Nathan turns to fellow gambler, Sky Masterson, for the dough, and Sky ends up chasing the straight-laced missionary, Sarah Brown, as a result. “Guys and Dolls” takes the cast from the heart of Times Square to the cafes of Havana, Cuba, and even into the sewers of New York City, but eventually everyone ends up right where they belong.
Frank Loesser’s brassy, immortal score makes “Guys and Dolls” a crowd-pleaser that features famous songs such as “I’ve Never Been in Love Before,” “I’ll Know” and “Luck Be A Lady.”
