Reeling NY Giants fire coach Ben McAdoo, GM Reese after 10th loss

- FROM WIRE REPORTS

Believing the team was spiraling out of control, the New York Giants went out of character by making two major in-season moves, firing coach Ben McAdoo and general manager Jerry Reese.

With the team reeling at 2-10 in a season where most felt it was capable of challenging for a Super Bowl, co-owners John Mara and Steve Tisch reached the decision Monday morning. It came less than a day after the Giants lost in Oakland, with quarterback Eli Manning benched and the offensively inept team performing poorly again.

"We agreed that wholesale changes to this organization needed to be made to get us back to the team we expect it to be," Mara said at a hastily called news conference. "We also agreed it was pointless to wait any longer to make these changes."

Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo will take over as interim coach for the final four games. He coached the St. Louis Rams from 2009-11.

Ravens lose CB Smith

The surging Baltimore Ravens will play the final quarter of the regular season without cornerback Jimmy Smith, who will be on injured reserve while serving a suspension for violating the NFL policy on performance enhancing substances.

Smith tore his left Achilles tendon in Sunday's 44-20 victory over Detroit.

Ravens coach John Harbaugh confirmed Monday that Smith will go on IR, and said the team knew of the pending suspension before Sunday's game.

NFL rules allow a player to serve a suspension on injured reserve. Smith will not be paid during the suspension.

Gronk suspended

The NFL suspended New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski one game on Monday for a late, gratuitous hit to the head of Bills defensive back Tre'Davious White.

White was lying face down on the sideline after intercepting a pass in Buffalo on Sunday when Gronkowski body-slammed him, driving his forearm into White's back and head. Gronkowski was called for unnecessary roughness, but not kicked out of the game.

Gronkowski will appeal the punishment, his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, told The Associated Press. White entered the concussion protocol, Bills coach Sean McDermott said.

After the game, Patriots coach Bill Belichick appeared to apologize to his Buffalo counterpart. Gronkowski also apologized, saying he let his frustration get the better of him.

Bills to stick with Taylor at QB

Sean McDermott is sticking with Tyrod Taylor as the Bills starter so long as the quarterback's bruised left knee holds up.

And Buffalo's coach had nothing more to say Monday about Gronkowski pile-driving into the back of White's head.

"Look, we've moved on," McDermott said a day after Taylor and White were hurt in a 23-3 loss to New England.

Tests revealed Taylor sustained a bruised patellar tendon, while White is being evaluated for a concussion.
