Mayfield, Okoronkwo highlight All-Big 12 teams

Oklahoma quarterbac­k Baker Mayfield and linebacker/defensive end Ogbonnia Okoronkwo were both honored in big ways Thursday in the release of the coaches' All-Big 12 team.

Mayfield was named the conference's Offensive Player of the Year. It's the second time in Mayfield's career he's earned the honor and the third consecutiv­e season it's gone to a Sooners player.

Mayfield also earned the honor in 2015, and wide receiver Dede Westbrook won it last year.

Mayfield, who is the front-runner for the Heisman Trophy, has thrown for 4,097 yards, 37 touchdowns and five intercepti­ons this season.

On the defensive side, linebacker/defensive end Ogbonnia Okoronkwo was named the conference's Co-Defensive Player of the Year.

Okoronkwo shares the award with Texas linebacker Malik Jefferson. Okoronkwo had eight sacks, three forced fumbles and 17.5 tackles for loss.

Sooners left tackle Orlando Brown was named the Big 12 Offensive Lineman of the Year for the second consecutiv­e season.

Freshman linebacker Kenneth Murray was named the Co-Defensive Freshman of the Year.

Mayfield, Okoronkwo and Brown were joined on the first team by fullback Dimitri Flowers, tight end Mark Andrews and center Erick Wren. Andrews and Brown were unanimous selections.

Oklahoma State had six players on the first team, headlined by wide receiver James Washington, who was a unanimous pick. Running back Justice Hill, offensive lineman Zach Crabtree and Brad Lundblade, defensive lineman DeQuinton Osborne and defensive back Tre Flowers were the other Cowboy first teamers.

Running back Rodney Anderson, guard Ben Powers, guard Dru Samia, kicker Austin Seibert, defensive end D.J. Ward and safety Steven Parker were named to the second team for Oklahoma.

Oklahoma State quarterbac­k Mason Rudolph highlights the Cowboys on the second team. Wide receiver Marcell Ateman and defensive lineman Jordan Brailford also earned second-team honors.

Linebacker Emmanuel Beal, wide receiver Marquise Brown, tight end Grant Calcaterra, offensive tackle Bobby Evans, defensive back Will Johnson, linebacker Caleb Kelly and Murray were honorable mention selections. Anderson also earned votes for offensive newcomer of the year. CeeDee Lamb and running back Trey Sermon earned votes for offensive freshman of the year. Seibert earned honorable mention honors as a punter and votes for special teams player of the year. Lincoln Riley earned votes for coach of the year honors.

Oklahoma State's honorable mention players included fullback Britton Abbott, kicker Matt Ammendola, tight end Keenen Brown, linebacker Calvin Bundage, linebacker Justin Phillipes, defensive back Ramon Richards, punter Zach Sinor and linebacker Chad Whitener. Crabtree received votes for offensive lineman of the year, Osborne for defensive lineman of the year, Rudolph for offensive player of the year and Dillon Stoner for offensive freshman of the year.
