- FROM STAFF REPORTS

A Devon Energy official showed up during a pep rally to surprise Luther High School with a $25,000 grant to fund field trips, guest speakers, updates to the chemistry and physics lab and the creation of a robotics club.

It’s the latest award in Devon’s Science Giants program, which has invested nearly $600,000 in school projects since 2008.

Luther High serves more than 220 students. The Science Giants grant, awarded Thursday, is designed to help Luther Lions see a world of science outside their neighborhood and develop a love of learning, according to a news release.

“This Devon Science Giants grant is a great supplement to the current curriculum. It will allow us to inspire and encourage students’ natural curiosity by providing more handson experiences,” said Jerry Martin, Luther High principal.

Allen Wright, Devon’s vice president for public and government affairs, made the surprise announcement during a school pep rally full of cheering students.

“We’re pleased to award this grant to Luther High to enhance science education for students in earth science, engineering and geology,” Wright said.

“Science plays an important role in our business at Devon, and we want to encourage the next generation. With these new projects, great things are ahead for students at Luther High.”

More than 20 public schools across Oklahoma County submitted Science Giants grant proposals.

Jessica L. Sigle led the school’s grant team, along with fellow faculty members Bert Bishop, Amanda Grogan and Geoffrey Agan.
