Walter Webster “Doc” Sargent, age 97, of Chardon, Ohio, peacefully passed away at his home on July 17, 2022. He was born on August 8, 1924, to Edwin Taylor and Grace (nee: Donley) Sargent in Mantua, Ohio. His family moved to Chardon in 1938, where he graduated from Chardon High School in the Class of 1942. (He was proud to have been on the baseball team that made it to the state finals that year.) He was a proud veteran of the US Navy as a “Sea Bee” serving during WWII. He married Faye Park in 1946 (she preceded him in death in 2000) and then attended The Ohio State University, graduating with a degree in Optometry in 1954. Doc had his own practice in Willoughby, OH until he retired in 1997 at the age of 73.

Walter was a lifelong active member of the Chardon United Methodist Church where he had served on most every Board or Committee. He had also been a charter member of the Willoughby Rotary Club, a Chardon Village Councilman for 16 years, and a lifelong fan of the Cleveland Indians Guardians. A lifelong enjoyment of pitching horseshoes earned him a Gold Medal at the Senior Olympics.

Walter is survived by his wife, Joyce (nee: Bican) Hummel, whom he married in 2006; a daughter, Elizabeth (Robert) Emmons of Chardon; stepchildr­en, Thomas (Chris) Hummel Jr. and Heidi (Paul) Marks, both of Chardon; grandchild­ren,

Taylor (Becky) Emmons, Rachel (Matthew) Hinder, Thomas (Allyson) Hummel III, Kaitlyn (Chad) Sanders, Emily Hummel, David Marks, Hannah Marks, Jeremy Marks; 4 great-granddaugh­ters.

He was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother Helen (nee: Hannah) Sargent; 1st wife Faye (nee: Park) Sargent and brother, Warren Sargent.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on August 6, 2022, at the Chardon United Methodist Church, 515 North Street, Chardon, OH 44024, where the family will receive friends following the service in Hayden Hall. A private family interment will be held at Chardon Municipal Cemetery.
