Events planned for National Library Week

Mentor Public Library announced it will celebrate National Library Week with author visits, art programs, car talk, yoga story times and more.

National Library Week begins April 9, and continues through April 14. Mentor Public Library’s schedule will include:

• A read-along of Jeanne DuPrau’s “City of Ember” at the library’s Headlands Branch. Tweens can come to the library at 4 p.m. from Monday through Wednesday, and each day they’ll read and discuss a chapter of “Ember.”

• Author, historian and Cleveland Indians fan Scott Longert is talking Tribe when he visits 6:30 p.m. April 9 at the Main Branch. Longert will describe the Indians’ pennant race in 1940 and discuss how WWII changed baseball, the fate of the Indians, and the life of Bob Feller.

•A visit from midwife-turned-bestsellin­g-author Patricia Harman will take place at 6:30 p.m. April 10 at the Main Branch. Harman will read from her newest novel, “The Runaway Midwife” and chat about her 30 years of experience as a midwife, which ranges from helping deliver babies in log cabins to teaching at learning hospitals.

• A continuati­on of the library’s and James A. Garfield National Historic Site’s “Leaders & Legacies of the Civil War” series. Specifical­ly, people can learn how leaders of both the Union and Confederac­y received valuable military experience during the Mexican-American War at noon April 11 at the Main Branch.

• A special story time that stretches kids’ minds and body will take place at 1:30 p.m. April 11 at the Main Branch. The children will listen to Kristen Fischer’s “Zoo Zen Count to Ten” and recreate the story using yoga poses.

• A poetry-themed meeting of the library’s Wordplay Writing Club where kids can hone their writing skills will be held at 4:30 p.m. April 11 at the Main Branch.

•The latest gathering of Studio MPL, the library’s art club for kids, will be at 4 p.m. April 12 at the Main Branch.

• Local mechanic Bill Snow will offer practical advice for maintainin­g cars when he visits the Main Branch at 5:30 p.m. April 12.

• The library eighth annual Shred Day, in which people can have their documents shredded for free by Xpress Shredding, will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 14 in the library’s auxiliary parking lot on the corner of Mentor Avenue and Sharonlee Drive.

• A special Earth Day program will be at 1 p.m. April 14 at the Headlands Branch. Kids can beautify the neighborho­od by planting seeds from the library’s seed catalog.

• A family movie is set for 1 p.m. April 14. Families can enjoy an all-ages- appropriat­e film at the Main Branch. The library will provide the popcorn.

• Make DIY bird feeders and nesting materials out of household items with the Picking Up STEAM Club at 2 p.m. April 14 at the Lake Branch.

The Main Branch is located at 8215 Mentor Ave. in Mentor while the Headlands Branch is at 4669 Corduroy Road, also in Mentor. The Lake Branch is located at 5642 Andrews Road in Mentor-on-the-Lake.
