Senior running back Nick Perusek was again the main man on the ground during Avon’s 56-0 win over host Midview on Sept. 27. Perusek rushed for 113 yards and scored three touchdowns, as the Eagles remain undefeated at 5-0.

The Eagles wanted to make a statement early on with the running game, and they did just that. They scored five rushing touchdowns in the game.

The first score of the game for Avon was a 1-yard touchdown rush by junior wide receiver CJ Colombo with 5:59 remaining in the first quarter.

Perusek had two rushing touchdowns, and a 49-yd touchdown reception all in the first half. It’s the second straight week Perusek had three touchdowns. Last week against Berea-Midpark, he had three touchdowns, also all in the first half.

“Just staying focused every day at practice,” said Perusek about his touchdown streak. “Working hard every day at practice, and then coming out ready to play and not taking any game lightly.”

Perusek scored on a 2-yard touchdown run - his first of the night - at the 3:17 mark of the first quarterto make it, 14-0.

The second touchdown came during the second quarter, as he scored on an 8-yard touchdown run to make it, 28-0, in the second quarter.

His third touchdown came when he hauled in a 49-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Danny Zeh to make it 35-0 with 6:35 until halftime.

Avon head coach Mike Elder knows he has a special player in Perusek, but said the play of his team’s offensive line has been outstanding this season.

“We talk a lot about Nick, and he’s special,” Elder said. “There’s no question, but it’s more about guys around him blocking, too. I mean, on some of those plays, as you saw, he’s not touched. So we should probably talk a lot more about the guys up front and the job they do.

“You can say it every week if you want, but really the true story is how we’re blocking on the perimeter, the unselfishness of our wide receivers to give it up and block.”

Zeh threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Noah Mangan in the second quarter. Sophomore quarterback Chase Myers ran for a 53-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Midview’s first drive was one of the positives for Coach DJ Shaw. It registered multiple first downs, and got into Avon terrioritory.

“We had a good first drive,” Shaw said. “I was proud of the way our kids executed on it. Got a couple fourth-down conversions. Then after that it didn’t take them long, they tempoed us and did a really good job.

“They’re a really good football team. We did some good things all night. I’m proud of our kids the way they battled, but they kicked our butts.”

With another huge win over a conference rival, Perusek was impressed with the team’s effort.

“I don’t think we could have done much better, looking at the scoreboard,” he said.

Up next, Avon (5-0, 2-0 SWC) will face another conference rival at Westlake on Oct. 4. Midview (3-2, 0-2 SWC) will also face another conference rival on Oct. 4, against North Olmsted at home.
