The suspect of an alleged domestic violence case was transported by police to the hospital after he suffered injuries to his hand while assaulting his girlfriend, authorities say

Kevin Jones, 29, of 45121 state Route 20, Oberlin, was taken into custody by Elyria police after they responded to a call from a neighbor of the victim.

Officers responded to an apartment building in the 1800 block of Middle Avenue at about 2:15 a.m. Dec. 16.

Upon arrival, a man later identified as Jones was met by officers and allegedly told them “I did it,” police said.

After entering the residence, police noticed the victim had visible injuries and appeared distraught, according to Elyria police Capt. Chris Costantino.

The victim told officers that Jones was the father of her child and he had entered the apartment and began punching her in the face.

The victim had a bloody lip, a bruise near her left eye socket, bruises on both of her arms, and blood coming from her left ear, police said.

“She had some bad injuries, and her eye was swollen shut,” Costantino said. “There’s always a concern later down the line if something like this will heal correctly.”

An incident report stated that the victim tried to protect herself from getting hit in the face by putting her forearms up, but Jones continued to hit her.

The victim escaped from Jones and made her way to another apartment where she was able to contact police.

According to the victim, Jones lives with his mother in Oberlin. However, the victim said Jones has a key to her apartment and that’s likely how he entered.

The victim was transported by LifeCare to University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center for an evaluation and the treatment of her wounds, police said.

Jones was transported to the hospital where he received treatment for his injured hands and then was released to police custody.

Jones was charged with felonious assault, a seconddegree felony; aggravated burglary, a first-degree felony; and two counts of domestic violence, both first-degree misdemeanors. He is being held in the Lorain County Jail in lieu of a $170,000 bond.

Jones is scheduled to appear in court at 2 p.m. Dec. 18.
