Darold W. Silkwood, 92, formerly of Bethesda, MD, died May 6, 2022 at Moravian Village of Bethlehem. He was married to the late Carol R. Silkwood for 69 years. He was born in Racine, WI on Jan. 21, 1930 to the late Warren and Marjorie (Boggess) Silkwood. Darold had a long distinguished career in public service working for the U.S. Government at the Arms Control and Disarmament Agency of the U.S. State Department.

After a stint in the U.S. Army, where he played in the Army Band, he completed graduate work at the University of Wisconsin and started his professional career in computers, when a single computer took up an entire room. This brought him to Washington

D.C. and eventually to work at the Pentagon and then the U.S. Department of State. Mid-career he accepted an overseas assignment and moved his family to the Netherlands. In addition to exciting and meaningful work, he used this opportunity to travel with his family and instilled in his daughter a love of diverse landscapes and cultures. Music was a constant in his life. He played the oboe and clarinet and was continuously part of one or more chamber groups, orchestras, or bands. After retiring, he spent

his time learning investing and traveling with his wife Carol to locations near and far, exotic, and mundane. He had a wry sense of humor and was always generous with his time, talking with and helping others, family and friends. Darold was a Unitarian Universalist and member of the congregations in Bethesda and then Frederick MD, and in Bethlehem where he assisted with finance and oversight.

SURVIVORS: Darold is survived by his daughter: Anne and son-in-law Pete Meltzer; grandchildren: Erica Meltzer and Tyler Meltzer; great-grandchildren: Charles and Mila.
