LV FLASHBACK

-

A look back at Lehigh Valley sports stories over the years from May 7.

2007: For the first time in area soccer history, two players reach the 100-goal career mark in the same game when Brittany Butler and Amanda Gerhard do so in Catasauqua’s 7-2 Colonial League win over Lehighton. Butler scores three goals to hit 100 even; Gerhard scores twice to push her total to 101.

2006: With the help of local products Caleb Calarco (Tamaqua), Mike Venarchick (Lehighton) and Jeremy Faust (Parkland), King’s ends DeSales’ six-year reign as Freedom Conference baseball tournament champions with a 6-3 win in the championship game. Faust knocks in two runs early with his 100th career hit; Calarco, who had four hits in a 2-1, 15-inning win over the Bulldogs the previous day, knocks in two runs with a fifthinning double; and Venarchick caps the four-run outburst with a two-run homer.

2002: Saucon Valley’s Diana Bown scores the 100th goal of her career in a 2-2 Colonial League girls soccer deadlock with Palisades.

1996: Wayne Grube, who will retire as a teacher at the end of the school year, announces his resignation after 10 years as Wilson’s football coach following a vote by the district’s school board prohibiting teachers from, among other things, coaching after their retirement. Grube, whom the board had voted to retain 7-2 earlier in the spring with the knowledge that he was retiring, posted a 63-45 record with one Colonial League championship at Wilson. Including a 12-year term at Easton, he was 144-896 in 22 years as a head coach.
