LEHIGH VALLEY FLASHBACK

-

A look back at Lehigh Valley sports stories over the years from Oct. 22.

2005: In a showdown between two of the top high school field hockey programs in the country, unbeaten Emmaus (21-0) snaps Eastern, N.J.’s, six-year, 153-game unbeaten streak with a 4-1 victory. Christina Bortz scores all three Emmaus goals against the three-time defending mythical national champions, who fall to 13-1-2 for the season.

2005: D.J. Lenehan becomes Wilson’s career passing leader in yardage (3,061) and touchdown passes (30) when he completes 10 of 21 for 158 yards and two

TDs in a 17-0 win over Pen Argyl. 2000: The largest Goodman Stadium crowd that didn’t come to see Lehigh play Lafayette — 16,906 — watches Lehigh score two fourth-quarter touchdowns for a 21-14 win over Bucknell that keeps them unbeaten at 7-0. 1996: Parkland’s Justin Kolumber survives a sevenman playoff and outlasts Downingtown’s Greg Marshalek to become the third golfer from District 11 and first in 45 years to win a PIAA championship. Kolumber and six others finished with a two-day total of 148, and he and Marshalek battled for six holes after the other five challengers bowed out on the first playoff hole. Kolumber joins Wilson’s Norm Staats (1938) and Allentown’s Bob Schoener

Jr. (1951) as champions from District 11.

1990: Southern Lehigh outshoots Palisades 3-1 in a shootout after the two teams battle to a 2-2 draw through regulation and 20 minutes of overtime for its fourth straight Colonial League soccer title.

976: Steve McNamee scores four touchdowns — two on pass receptions, the other two on 81 and 51-yard punt returns — in Phillipsburg’s 48-26 East Penn Conference victory at Allen.
