KEEP AN EYE ON

Action Jackon: Andre Jackson, the 6-foot-6 sophomore, is hardly a complete player yet. He turns the ball over a bit too much, can be a bit erratic, and doesn’t have great shooting form. Still, Jackson is second on the team in rebounding (7.7 per game), can run the point for stretches of a game, often makes dynamic passes, boasts superb athleticism and (despite that poor form) actually leads UConn in 3-point shooting (47.6 percent, on a small sample-size 10-for-21).

“He’s on a great track right now,” said Dan Hurley. “I credit Andre for allowing us to coach him, not getting rattled in Year One when he was struggling to produce understand his identity. But he’s understanding his identity and growing as a player.”

Cole’s charge account: R.J. Cole leads the Huskies in scoring, assists, steals and charges. In fact, there’s no real close second on the team to Cole’s 14 charges this season — to Hurley’s chagrin.

“You’re getting somebody potentially in foul trouble,” the coach said of charges. “It gets us closer to the bonus, and we’re a good free-throw shooting team, for the most part. They galvanize the team ... I wish more guys would take (charges).”

Hey, Bulldogs!: Think UConn is in for a tough week in a few weeks, with three games scheduled in the span of five days? The Huskies will get no sympathy from Butler.

The Bulldogs were romped in Philadephia by No. 11 Villanova on Sunday, 82-42. They now have to play No. 25 UConn twice in three days.

“This is a hard league,” Hurley noted. “It’s hard to go on the road and beat anybody, especially Villanova. It’s hard to win a home game against anybody.”

“You don’t get to this level,” Hurley continued, “unless you have a lot of pride and competitiveness. None of us like getting embarrassed. So, we understand they’re gonna come in with that type of mentality. So we’ve got to come out and really play our best game.”
