Liberty Bank marks 195th year
MIDDLETOWN — The Liberty Bank team officially turned 195 years old Monday. This milestone year marks nearly two centuries of dedication in taking care of the financial and societal needs of their customers, communities and co-workers, according to a press release.
“Now more than ever, it’s critically important that we take the time to reflect on what Liberty Bank has become over the last 195 years, what we stand for and what it means to be a Liberty employee,” David W. Glidden, president and CEO, said in a prepared statement. “As we proudly celebrate this milestone year in our organization’s history, we continue to do what our original founders intended — especially now — when they came together on that historic Wednesday exactly 195 years ago.”
The Savings Bank of Middletown — now Liberty Bank — was founded May 4, 1825. Today, it is the oldest bank in Connecticut, the third largest bank in the state, with $6 billion in assets, and one of the largest mutual banks in the country, according to the financial institution.
It also continues to operate as an independent mutual bank, owned by their customers, not shareholders, the release said.
Liberty Bank continues to build on it’s strong and nearly two-century commitment to Middletown with the opening of their a corporate headquarters in 2018 at 245 Long Hill Road, the reopening of its Main Street office building in 2020, and maintaining its two branches at 460 S. Main St. and 827 Washington St. in Middletown.
