McHugh won’t seek 2nd term on UConn board
MIDDLETOWN » Larry McHugh, chairman of the UConn Board of Trustees and president of the Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce, will not serve another term after his current sixyear term ends Friday.
McHugh, who made the announcement during today’s board meeting in Storrs, said he’s been in talks with Gov. Dannel P. Mal-
loy since January about not renewing his term.
McHugh said he was waffling between stepping down from the board — or as head of the chamber.
“It’s a very, very tough decision because I really enjoy working up there at UConn. At my age — I’m 77 — six years out, although you can quit anytime you want, I’m not that way,” the former coach said. “If you take a commitment, you’ve got to stick with it.”
Between his responsibilities at the chamber and UConn, McHugh said, it’s like having two full-time jobs. “I’ve got to slow up a little bit and had to make some choices, but have really enjoyed my work up at UConn,” said McHugh, who has been involved in higher education for 35 years.
He’s proud of several accomplishments that he and the other board members have made.
“The big thing is UConn had over 37,000 applicants for 3,600 places. That speaks volumes about what type of university it is. You’d think most would be from Connecticut but only
