Lee, Codreanu move on to quarterfin­als

The first day of the District 1 Singles Championsh­ips was a good one for the Pioneer Athletic Conference.

Every competitor won a match, while PAC-10 tournament finalists, Owen J. Roberts’ Meredith Lee and Methacton’s Mihaela Codreanu moved on to the quarterfin­als Thursday at Healthplex in Springfiel­d.

Codreanu, the reigning District 1 champion, downed Spring-Ford freshman Tori Alexander, 6-1, 6-2, in the second round. Alexander won 6-0, 6-0 over Academy Park’s Lattana Sithara in the first round.

Codreanu downed Unionville’s Sophie Wilks, 6-3, 6-1, in her debut.

Lee, the No. 2 seed after winning the PAC-10 championsh­ip, had a first-round bye and beat Cheltenham’s Eryn Banton, 6-4, 6-3, to reach the quarterfin­als.

Phoenixvil­le freshman Julia Gumieniak defeated Neshaminy’s Alice Borosky in the first round but later fell to top seed Peyton Bradley of Downingtow­n West.

In Class AA, Pope John Paul II freshman Kathryn Alvarez defeated Villa Joseph Marie sophomore Brooke Simonson 7-5, 7-5 in the first round. In the quarterfin­als, Alvarez lost to No. 2 seed and former District 1 champion Nazareth Academy senior Alex Vo, 6-0, 6-2. PERKIOMEN SCHOOL 5, PLUMSTEAD 0 » A strong showing in the singles bracket helped the Panthers sweep Plumstead Christian in their non-league match.

Jill Kachmar swept her first-singles duel 6-0, 6-0, and Perkiomen’s first-doubles team of Amelia Dormer and Caitlin Konradt turned in a similar performanc­e. Perkiomen lost only five games on the day.

Field hockey

PERKIOMEN VALLEY 2, BOYERTOWN 0 » Laura Shelton provided both of the assists as the Vikings downed the Bears in PAC-10 play.

Gabby Martina scored off a corner in the first half as did Kelsey Giese in the second. Miranda Wesley and Kerri Hanshaw combined for nine saves in the shutout. Kaitlyn Berger made 19 saves for Boyertown. UPPER PERKIOMEN 4, PHOENIXVIL­LE 2 » Hope Flack had a role in two scores as the Tribe downed the Phantoms in PAC-10 action.

Flack scored UP’s first goal and also assisted on Abriana Gatto’s score. Julia Rogers and Kathryn Lehman also got on the board while Erika Boyer made nine saves in goal. Liz Gyuris and Katie McEar-lean each had a goal and an assist for Phoenixvil­le. POPE JOHN PAUL II 11, CONWELL-EGAN 0 » Jackie Lerro figured in on six goals, and Stephanie Petery five, to head the Golden Panthers’ rout of Conwell-Egan.

Lerro had a game-high four goals and two assists, and Petery added two goals while assisting on three others. PJP’s scoring was rounded out by solo goals from Abby Togno, Hannah White, Emily Rigby (one assist), Katherine Martin (one assist) and Madison Green, with Kara Whitehouse getting credit for two assists and Cierra Peterlin for one.

Boys soccer

PERKIOMEN SCHOOL 3, COLLEGIUM 1 » PK Arthur did all the scoring for the Panthers in their Tri-County League win over Collegium Charter.

Arthur was assisted on one of his goals by Michael Pulcini. Sam Glavin gave Perkiomen two-save goaltendin­g, facing just three shots while his offense took 14 at the Collegium nets. BRANDYWINE HEIGHTS 3, PHOENIXVIL­LE 2 » Michael Unis scored on a penalty kick with five minutes to go to lift the Bullets (7-9) over the Phantoms (6-8) in nonleague play.

Phoenixvil­le got its goals from Tony Silva and Andre Souza. At the defensive end, Mitchell Coll provided nine-save goaltendin­g.

Girls soccer

DANIEL BOONE 2, EXETER 0 » Kayleigh Kardos did all the game’s scoring, heading the Blazers’ Berks Conference shutout of the Eagles.

Assisting Kardos on her first-half goals were Alayna Roesener and Sammy Settle. Boone outshot its guests, 14-0, requiring goalie Makenzie Witzel to make no saves in the game.

Girls volleyball

PERKIOMEN VALLEY 3, PHOENIXVIL­LE 0 » The Vikings defeated the Phantoms in PAC-10 play.

PV won by scores of 25-7, 25-13 and 25-15 led by Caitlin Corcoran’s 15 kills while Ellie Min added 31 assists. Cecilia Bauer led the way for Phoenixvil­le with seven kills, two aces, four blocks and seven digs. Keara Hennessey had 15 assists. POPE JOHN PAUL II 3, METHACTON 0 » Hayley Wusinich reached double digits in assists and digs to help the Golden Panthers sweep the Warriors in their PAC-10 match. PJP won 25-22, 2520 and 25-14.

Wusinich had 23 assists and 18 digs for the Panthers, who also got 20 digs from Alyssa Cianciulli and 13 kills from Jordan Shemonski. Myah Cordrey contribute­d eight kills while Mary Kate Mooney added four kills and three aces. WILSON 3, DANIEL BOONE 0 » Megan Lynch had 14 kills, 10 digs and one assist to head the Bulldogs’ sweep of their Berks Conference match with the Blazers. Wilson won by set scores of 25-19, 26-24 and 25-19.

For the Blazers (5-6, 5-10), Courtney Kohler had 18 digs, four kills and three aces; Brittany Sankey had four kills, four blocks and two digs. Marissa Rapposelli had 19 digs.

Boys golf

PERKIOMEN SCHOOL 201, JENKINTOWN 261 » Minuette Leassig earned low-man honors for the Panthers in their non-league win over Jenkintown.

Leassig shot a one-overpar 37 for Perkiomen (4-1), edging teammate Andrew Tjahjadi’s 38. Michael Zhou (40), Levi Stoudt (41) and Matt Pulcini (45) rounded out the Panthers’ scoring.

College track

URSINUS COLLEGE » Head track and field/cross country coach Carl Blickle announced the hiring of Matt Kade as Assistant Track and Field Coach.

Kade comes to Ursinus after a successful stint as the head track and field coach at Daniel Boone High School. He will be working directly with horizontal and vertical jumpers throughout the indoor and outdoor season.

Over the previous six years, Kade experience­d much success in the Boone track program, where he worked primarily with the sprinters, jumpers and hurdlers. Under his guidance, his athletes earned 15 county championsh­ips, five district titles, six state medals and a National Championsh­ip appearance.

Outside his coaching duties at Ursinus, Kade works as a math teacher and boys’ soccer coach at Daniel Boone High School, where he has led the Blazers to appearance­s in the county and district playoffs each season since taking over as head coach.
