Another rainy week on tap, with chance of rush-hour showers Tuesday

SAN JOSE >> The latest series of storms that arrived over the Bay Area on Sunday could slow morning commuters Tuesday, as meteorologists forecast a week with intermittent showers.

Chilly temperatures Sunday morning were expected to give way to a slight chance of light rain by night, the National Weather Service reported.

Meteorologist Matt Mehle said scattered showers Sunday would move across the North Bay, with a few showers moving down into Santa Clara Valley at night.

The Sunday system, Mehle said, was weak, but the storm shaping up for tonight into Tuesday will be stronger.

Mehle said rain should develop this afternoon in the North Bay and move southward tonight into Tuesday morning, just in time for rush hour.

By Wednesday, a stronger storm system with the potential to shower the entire Bay Area is likely to arrive, which could lead to a sprinkling of snow at the higher elevations of the East Bay hills, the Santa Cruz Mountains and the mountains above Big Sur.

That rain could continue into Thursday.

Most of the area will remain on the cooler side this week, with daytime highs in the mid-50s and lows in the mid- to low 40s through Friday.

Despite rain through at least the middle of the week, Mehle said there doesn’t seem to be an atmospheric river — a relatively long, narrow stream of tropical water vapor — that usually brings with it fears of hazardous flooding and mudslides.

“This will all be beneficial rain,” he said.
