Terry’s double-double helps Stanford stay undefeated
Tyrell Terry had 20 points and 11 rebounds and Stanford whipped Oklahoma 7354 in the Hall of Fame Classic on Monday night in Kansas City, Mo.
Spencer Jones finished with 13 points and Oscar Da Silva had 11 to go with nine rebounds.
The Cardinal scored the first 17 points of the game, including nine from Terry. It took six minutes for the Sooners to score their first points.
Oklahoma scored the next 10 points, cutting the deficit to just seven midway through the first half. It never got any closer.
Terry had 16 points and nine rebounds in the first half when the Cardinal (7-0) led 37-24.
Austin Reaves had 17 points for the Sooners (5-1).
Both shot 38% but the Cardinal had 10 3-pointers and was 13 of 19 from the foul line while Oklahoma made four treys and was just 4 of 13 at the line.
The Cardinal outscored the Sooners 15-0 on secondchance points and had a 5132 rebounding advantage.
Stanford faces Butler for the Hall of Fame Classic title tonight.
NO. 3 SPARTANS LOSE >> Landers Nolley II hit a big 3-pointer in the final minute and scored 22 points, helping Virginia Tech hold off No. 3 Michigan State 7166 at the Maui Invitational in Lahaina, Hawaii.
The teams grinded through a back-and-forth second half. The Hokies (60) — projected 14th out of 15 ACC teams in the league’s preseason poll — went up 10 with 4 ½ minutes left before Michigan State (3-2) fought back within one.
Nolley responded with a 3 for a 68-64 lead with 47 seconds left, and Virginia Tech made enough free throws down the stretch to earn the marquee win in coach Mike Young’s first season.
Virginia Tech will face Dayton in today’s semifinals.
NO. 17 TENNESSEE CONTINUES HOME STREAK >> Lamonte’ Turner had 17 points and 12 assists as Tennessee beat Chattanooga 58-46 to extend the longest active home winning streak in Division I to 30 games.
Tennessee (5-0) hasn’t lost at Thompson-Boling Arena since a 94-84 defeat to Auburn on Jan. 2, 2018.
Although he shot just 4 of 16 from the floor, Turner scored or assisted on 16 of Tennessee’s 19 baskets. The senior had just one turnover along with his 12 assists, two off the career high he set Nov. 12 against Murray State.
ARKANSAS WINS WITH 3 LATE IN OVERTIME >> Mason Jones banked in a 3-pointer from the right wing with one-tenth of a second left in overtime, helping Arkansas stay unbeaten with a 62-61 victory over Georgia Tech in Atlanta. Georgia Tech took its first lead since the midway point of the first half on James Banks’ short turnaround jumper with 22.3 seconds remaining, but Arkansas did not call timeout before Jones launched 25-footer to send the Yellow Jackets to their second straight loss.
Jones scored 24 points for Arkansas (6-0), which won its first road game under coach Eric Musselman. Georgia Tech is 2-2.
DUKE SOLIDIFIES NO. 1 RANKING >> Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski set the record for wins coaching a No. 1 team when his top-ranked Blue Devils knocked off Cal and Georgetown on backto-back nights to win the 2K Empire Classic.
He will have a chance to add to his 218-34 mark this week.
That’s because the Blue Devils (6-0) solidified their tight grip on the No. 1 spot in The Associated Press poll. They received 53 first-place votes from the 65-member media panel, easily out-distancing second-place Louisville.
“There’s really no words. You can’t put that feeling into words,” said Duke sophomore Tre Jones, when asked about his Hall of Fame coach. “No one knows that feeling unless you do play for him.”
Duke faces Stephen F. Austin tonight and Winthrop on Friday.
Baylor was the biggest mover after knocking off then-No. 17 Villanova behind 22 points from Jared Butler at the Myrtle Beach Invitational. The Bears moved up five spots to No. 19 this week.
