Cupertino city manager David Brandt announced Wednesday that he’ll leave the city in July after nearly six years as the city’s top administrative officer to lead a nonprofit in Oregon.

“I’m gratified to leave the city of Cupertino in a strong financial position,” Brandt said. “I’m also satisfied that the city was able to heavily invest in its infrastructure and expand its services to the community during my tenure. With the impending full occupation of Apple Park, it’s an exciting time to be in Cupertino.”

In Cupertino, the city manager is responsible to the city council for the operation of the city and oversees all city departments. The city manager also works closely with the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office, Santa Clara County Fire Department and the city’s elementary, high school and college districts.

“Cupertino is in a better place today than it was when David was hired,” Mayor Darcy Paul said. “That is a good touchstone by which one can assess a city manager’s impact. David did an excellent job for the community, and he will be missed.”

Brandt practiced landuse law in Oakland with a private firm before working for the cities of Alameda and Redmond, Oregon.

He received his bachelor’s degree in economics from UCLA and his master’s in urban planning from the University of Michigan. He earned his juris doctorate from the University of Wisconsin.

Brandt was hired in Cupertino in September 2012.

His last day will be July 6. City officials are expected to appoint an interim city manager over the next few weeks before beginning the recruitment process for his successor.
