QB Bridgewater to miss season

He suffers torn ACL, dislocates knee in noncontact injury

-

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Teddy Bridgewater is expected to miss at least the next season while recovering from a dislocated left knee and torn anterior cruciate ligament after a freak practice injury on Tuesday.

Bridgewater was taken by ambulance to a hospital after crumpling to the turf during practice, and the team announced hours later that his knee also had “other structural damage” that will need to be repaired in a surgery that will be scheduled in the coming days. But the team did say he had no nerve or arterial damage and it expects a full recovery after a “significant” rehabilitation.

Bridgewater suffered a noncontact knee injury while dropping back to pass, and it was so jolting that coach Mike Zimmer immediately ended practice. Players were visibly distraught as they left the field, some hurling expletives into the air and others kneeling in prayer for one of the team’s most popular players.

In some ways, the n Patriots’ last exhibition game against the New York Giants on Thursday will serve as a sort of going away party for Tom Brady. Or at least a “see you later.” Brady’s four-game suspension for his role in “Deflategate” begins Saturday as New England shifts to the regular season. Once it starts, Brady won’t be eligible to rejoin the active roster until Oct. 3.

The Dallas Cowboys n placed quarterback Kellen Moore on season-ending injured reserve, eliminating the chance for him to return after breaking his right ankle in practice early in training camp. Moore was expected to be Tony Romo’s backup, and now both are out after Romo broke a bone in his back in the preseason against Seattle. Rookie Dak Prescott figures to start at least the first few games if healthy.

Rookie defensive end n Joey Bosa finally made it back onto the field for the San Diego Chargers after a long holdout. Bosa missed 31 days and three preseason games during a nasty contract spat that included disagreement over payment of Bosa’s $17 million signing bonus and whether the contract would have offset language. He eventually signed Monday.

A USC football player n is being investigated on suspicion of sexual assault in Utah. Police documents show authorities are looking into allegations against linebacker Osa Masina stemming from a July 30 incident.

Soccer

L.A. Galaxy forward Gyasi Zardes will miss the rest of the MLS regular season with a broken foot.

Goalkeeper Hope Solo n has decided to end her season with the Seattle Reign of the National Women’s Soccer League. The beleaguered goalkeeper, who was handed a six-month suspension and saw her contract with U.S. Soccer terminated last week, announced her departure from her professional club team in a statement.

Golf

Team Europe captain Darren Clarke opted for a mix of form and experience in his picks for the Ryder Cup, with Thomas Pieters, Lee Westwood and Martin Kaymer joining a team seeking an unprecedented fourth straight victory. Masters champions Danny Willett, Chris Wood, Rafa Cabrera-Bello, Andy Sullivan and Matthew Fitzpatrick also will sample golf’s biggest team event for the first time. They qualified automatically along with Rory McIlroy, British Open champion Henrik Stenson, Olympic gold medalist Justin Rose, and Sergio Garcia.
