Walsh Jennings, Ross move to final

Duowins twice atworld volleyball qualifier

Saratoga’s Kerri Walsh Jennings and partner April Ross won twice Saturday to advance to the final of the World Series of Beach Volleyball Olympic qualifying tournament in Long Beach.

Just five weeks after injuring a shoulder for the second time this year, Walsh Jennings and her partner reached Sunday’s title match by defeating sixth- seeded Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhors­t of Germany 21- 19, 21- 17.

The No. 8 Americans also won their quarterfin­al by surviving the deciding third set 18- 16 in a riveting 1- hour, 15- minute match against No. 4 Heather Bansley and Sarah Pavan of Canada. They advanced with an 18- 21, 21- 14, 18- 16 victory.

They will meet Brazil’s Talita Antunes and Larissa Franca, who defeated Australia’s Louise Bawden and Taliqua Clancy 21- 17, 21- 18.

College women’s soccer

No. 3 Stanford allowed an early goal but rallied for two late goals to earn a season- opening 2- 1 victory late Friday night against Hawaii in Honolulu.

Stanford found itself in an early hole after allowing a goal 31 seconds into the game. However, the Cardinal applied plenty of pressure throughout the match, outshootin­g the Rainbows 23- 4 and holding a 6- 0 cornerkick advantage.

Andi Sullivan broke through for Stanford in the 73rd minute when she converted a rebound off a blocked penalty kick to tie it at 1- 1.

Freshman Alana Cook delivered the first goal of her collegiate career and the eventual game winner less than seven minutes later to give Stanford a 2- 1 lead. Sullivan and Michelle Xiao led the Cardinal with five shots apiece, followed by Haley Rosen with four. Mariah Lee generated three shots off the bench, while Stephanie Amack contribute­d two shots.

Stanford goalie Jane Campbell registered one stop.

San Jose Giants

The Bakersfiel­d Blaze scored four runs in the first inning and went on to beat the host Giants 6- 3 at Municipal Stadium. San Jose designated hitter Brian Ragira went 2 for 4 and drove in two runs.

Tri- Valley

of

Dublin captured the Babe Ruth 13- year- old World Series championsh­ip, defeating New England 20- 0 in the title game in Jamestown, New York.

With 11 runs in the first two innings, Tri- Valley, the Pacific Southwest champions, cruised to victory. Asher Golden’s two- run double and Beau Garratt’s two- run single were among the highlights in a nine- run first inning.

Golden went 3 for 3 with three RBIs, Garratt finished 2 for 3 and drove in four runs, and Max Masajlo was 2 for 2 with three RBIs. Jaden Sheppard earned the win, allowing one hit, one walk and striking out two in three innings.

nMiddle Atlantic scored a 8- 7 win in the Babe Ruth 14- year- old championsh­ip game over Tri- Valley, which scored three times in both the sixth and seventh innings to tie the title game in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Middle Atlantic prevailed with a run in the bottom of the seventh.

Nicholas Maestas went 3 for 3 and drove in runs for Tri- Valley, the Pacific Southwest champion.
