Mexican teams prep for Spartan Stadium dates

Famed Mexican teams Chivas de Guadalajar­a and Club America continue their rivalry Wednesday in Las Vegas in the most anticipate­d match of their summer tours that include stops at Spartan Stadium.

Chivas is featured in an all- Mexican League doublehead­er Saturday in San Jose. The club faces Pumas UNAM at Spartan Stadium after Cruz Azul plays Morelia ( 5 p. m.).

Club America will conclude a five- game tour of the U. S. at Spartan Stadium on July 12 against Puebla FC at 7: 30 p. m.

In May, Mexico Citybased America won its 11th Mexican league title.

Cal League

Mac Williamson and Jeff Arnold hit solo homers in a three- run-fifth inning, helping the San Jose Giants to a 11- 3 road win over Modesto. San Francisco reliever Santiago Casilla pitched two shutout innings in his second rehab appearance following knee surgery. Arnold, Travious Relaford and Shawn Payne each doubled leading off the eighth, and Chris Lofton and Kelby Tomlinson followed with RBI hits in the four- running inning.

Colleges

Cal picked up an oral commitment from cornerback Jaleel Wadood, a fourstar prospect from St. John Bosco High- Bellflower, according to Scout. com.

William Jessup hired former Stanford football star Mitch Pleis as athletic director. The Warriors have fi ve men’s teams and six women’s teams.

Basketball

Arizona signee Aaron Gordon of San Jose had 15 points, and Team USA ( 50) beat Australia 94- 51 at the FIBA under- 19 world championsh­ips in Prague, Czech Republic. Saint Mary’s signee Dane Pineau had eight points and eight rebounds for the Aussies.

Water polo

U. S. women’s coach Adam Kirkorian named a travel roster for the world championsh­ips this month in Barcelona, Spain, that included Stanford’s Annika Dries, Kiley Neushul, Melissa Seidemann, Lolo Silver and Maggie Steffens. Also chosen was UCLA’s KK Clark of Menlo Park.
