Q On Interstate 680 at Highway 24, dive bombing makes everyone hit their brakes behind the buffoon doing it. There is plenty of warning that the freeway splits and what lanes go where, so there’s no excuse at all for this. It makes me mad but what are you going to do but take a deep breath, maybe shake your fist and not let it raise your blood pressure. A Repeat after me: Remain calm, remain calm and keep your blood pressure low. Q Regarding the headline “Dive bombers are the ‘buffoons’ on Bay Area roads,” calling them buffoons is being charitable. I cringe in terror each time I have to navigate the Highway 85 to Highway 237merge in Mountain View. It is common to see people stop completely in the middle lane and cut across two lanes to exit. They are not only endangering themselves but also others. Serious accidents waiting to happen. I would rather call them terrorists than buffoons. A Let’s go overboard here. Road terrorism in the minds of many would work. Q People have not seen dive bombing until you’ve seen the Highway 101 exit to Highway 87 at the San Jose Airport. Between airport folks who don’t know where they’re going to dive bombers trying to get past the mile-long snarl, it’s worse than the 85-to-237 mess. A Some day, we’ll get a second exit lane at 101 to 87. But it’s time for a dive bombing confession from one of those lastminute lane changers. Q I gladly dive bomb at 101 to 87 every single time because as I get to the entrance to 87 there are two- and three-carlength gaps from people who do not accelerate into the turn. Instead they continue to go 30 mph and leave these massive gaps. And you have people who try to get over a half-mile from the entrance that backs up the second and third lanes, causing a false bottleneck where only the carpool lane moves. A OK. Q Your column on express lanes stated that a single white line will separate the lane from other lanes. However on Interstate 880 between Dixon Landing Road and Mission Boulevard, Caltrans has already installed some express lane signs and one of them says Do Not Cross Double White Lines. I hope this is a mistake. A It’s not a mistake. While nearly all future express lanes will permit drivers to enter and exit at almost all locations, double white lines will be installed at a few spots where merging issues exist along with dive bombing worries. This is one of them.
