Danner to speak on Hawaiian Homes act and its centennial

Homesteade­r Robin Puanani Danner of Anahola, Kauai, is the featured presenter Thursday at the inaugural 2020 Centennial Puwalu or conference of the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act via Zoom. Danner is secondterm chairwoman of the Sovereign Council of Hawaiian Homestead Associatio­ns that encompasse­s more than 40 organizati­ons statewide. She will discuss the 1920 Hawaiian Homes Commission Act and explain how homestead associatio­ns may register with the U.S. Department of the Interior.

The event marks the 100th anniversar­y of the 1920 Hawaiian Homes Commission Act, whose 122-page document is at website dhhl.hawaii. gov/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/ HawaiianHo­mes-Commission-Act-1921-AsAmmended-Searchable.pdf. This federal law provides for the Native Hawaiian homestead program overseeing 204,000 acres. Native Hawaiians with 50 percent or more Hawaiian blood quantum live, farm, ranch and undertake mercantile activities on those lands.
