As condolences are expressed following the death of a Michigan State Police trooper, the department is warning residents of people trying to capitalize off of the grief and concern.

Trooper Joel Popp died of his injuries after he stepped out of his patrol vehicle during a traffic stop and was struck by a passing car.

A scam alert was issued through the department recently that said it has been brought to their attention people have received phone calls soliciting funds on behalf of Popp’s family.

“Unfortunately, criminals will always take advantage of the good nature of our communities,” MSP posted on its website.

The post went on to say that MSP will never call anyone on the phone and ask for money.

“If you receive a call like this, please hang up.”

At 7:12 p.m. on Jan. 24,

Popp and other troopers were investigating a suspected impaired driver who was stopped on northbound I-75 near Birch Run in a curved lane of travel.

Police said another motorist, an 81-year-old man, struck two patrol cars and Popp.

The other driver had serious injuries but is expected to survive.

“If you see a trooper on the side of the road working a crash or helping a stranded motorist, please move and give them an extra lane and a prayer,” another MSP post said. “They could sure use it.”

According to MSP, Popp is the 56th Michigan State Trooper to be killed in the line of duty.

He served at the Tri-City Post his entire career. Popp is survived by his wife, Stefanie, and a young daughter. Funeral services are set for Wednesday at Saginaw Valley State University.
