The long-awaited splash pad for Clinton Township is now under construction on the grounds of the Civic Center.

Clinton Township Supervisor Bob Cannon said the splash pad should be done around the end of July or early August.

Brighton-based playground suppliers Penchura is constructing the 3,000-squarefoot play facility. The company submitted the lowest qualified bid for the project of $377,380.

“It’s pretty exciting to have one built here,” said Mary Bednar, public services director for the township. “It’s a nice amenity for the community to enjoy. I think the kids are really going to enjoy it.”

Splash pads — or spray pools — are recreation areas that have ground nozzles that spray water upward out of the splash pad’s rain deck. Other water features include treeshaped showers, or semicircular pipe showers

Because pads don’t need lifeguards and require less overall maintenance than pools, they are viewed as cheaper alternative but still offer plenty of fun, officials say.

The splash pad is under construction near the comfort station and gazebo at the Civic Center on Romeo Plank Road near Canal Road. It will include a water feature, fencing, landscaping, chairs, umbrellas and comfort station upgrades.

Township officials are still studying whether a user fee will be required. The Board of Trustees will make the final call, but board members have said Clinton Township residents will receive a discount if one is implemented.

Splash pads are growing in popularity among local families.

In past surveys among residents concerning recreation master plan amenities, splash pads came in second behind swimming pools as the most desired addition.
