Engineering your way through today’s edition
I hope you’re enjoying the reimagined Sunday edition of the Florida Times-Union, now in its third week. A lot of work goes into making this a product that feels special.
You’re kind enough to give us your money, your time and your attention and we want to be respectful of that and give you a positive reading experience.
Today is Mother’s Day. I hope those who are mothers have an opportunity today to be honored and celebrated. I hope those who are honoring and celebrating their mothers take a moment to appreciate how special that is.
And my prayers are with those who for whatever reason don’t have the relationship with their mother that they wish they did, or who are mourning a mother they wish they could have one more special day with.
Margaret Limbaugh is the first woman to oversee a JEA power plant in the history of the city-owned utility.
She was the mother of two young children when she decided to go back to school to pursue an engineering degree from UNF, entering a traditionally male-dominated field. She’s now among a growing number of women in engineering to rise to positions of leadership, including others at JEA and in other city departments. Times-Union staff writer David Bauerlein has covered city government and its independent authorities for many years, and he writes about this groundbreaking trend in today’s cover story.
In case you think a 1,900-word cover story isn’t enough engineering coverage, you’re in luck. The Inspiration page features some up-and-coming engineers from Landmark Middle School. The school’s robotics team, nicknamed the “Cybots,” recently won the state Lego competition, bringing the trophy home to Kernan Boulevard. It’s only the second time a Duval County school has topped that contest. Congratulations to those youngsters.
Elsewhere in today’s edition, you can check out the Jacksonville Now page to see the photo of the week. We’re lucky to have a pair of incredibly talented visual journalists in Bob Self and Corey Perrine to document all that happens in our community. You can get some ideas for things to do this week, and some dining suggestions as well. One downtown spot is a go-to hangout for me before taking in a Jumbo Shrimp game.
Go on over to the Vintage TimesUnion page to learn about the history of one significant Southbank building before heading off to the Sports, Life or Reason sections, whichever is your cup of tea, for more interesting reads.
Thank you as always for supporting local journalism. Feel free to reach out any time with messages of gratitude, praise or adoration. People are already plenty comfortable sending negative feedback. Just wanted to point out that you’re also allowed to send some positivity our way.
Thanks again for reading, and have a blessed Sunday.
