Sunday’s storms hit some areas hard and left others alone More inside

How was the weather Sunday? It depends on where you were.

In the Coachella Valley and the surrounding mountains and deserts, some areas saw major thunderstorms that dropped heavy rain led to flooding and other fallout. But other parts of the region saw only a few drops of rain — or even none at all.

National Weather Service meteorologists say the culprit was monsoonal conditions that see hot temperatures interact with moisture that is pushed up ‘Solid second place’: Palm Springs ends run of days of 110 degrees, from the Gulf of California and even the Gulf of Mexico to create storms that seem to come out of nowhere and are highly local in nature.

The result was a series of strong storms across the valley that deluged Palm Desert and Twentynine Palms with rain and even some hail, while sparing many other areas.

Meterologists told The Desert Sun that the nature of the storm meant that rain totals varied significantly from one spot to another.

The biggest totals were reported in Twentynine Palms, where meteorologist Matt Woods said one gauge located north of the intersection of Adobe Road and Two Mile Road measured 1.87 inches of rain.

Another nearby gauge, he said, measured 1.86 inches of rain. Woods said all of that rain fell between about 3:15 and 4 p.m. and that quarter sized hail was also reported.

However, other gauges located just a few miles away measured far less rain, with one on the north side of Joshua Tree reporting 0.35 inches.

The situation was similar in the Coachella Valley, where 1.34 inches of rain was reported at one site in Palm Desert but just 0.36 inches fell at a second site. However, only trace amounts of precipitation were measured Sunday at the Palm Springs airport and none was measured in Indio.

Woods said the National Weather Service received several reports of roadway flooding in Twentynine Palms. He said that a portion of Adobe Road was still closed as of Monday because of reported standing water.

The City of Twentynine Palms reported several other road closures Sunday night.
