HAVANA CLASSIC CAR TOUR
Barbara Wolf, Vanda Edington, Don Edington and Nancy Campbell
Where: Revolutionary Square in Havana, Cuba
Best meal: While we were moving too fast to stop and eat much of the time, we enjoyed a drink at a paladar, a cafe owned by the people, not the government. They are everywhere, and a greeter will approach you with a menu. Lobster was 7 Cuban pesos — the equivalent of $8 U.S.
Best deal: The free walking tour that begins at 9:30 a.m. on the corner of San Rafael, just east of the El Capitalio. The guide was an architect and shared
Who:
his knowledge of Havana and Cuba freely. (We gave a gratuity.)
Best time to go: We had pleasant weather in October and missed all the hurricanes.
The entry process is very controlled, and currency exchange must be done at entrance at the airport, cruise terminal or in hotels. The American dollar has a 13 percent fee for exchange. If you have Euros or British pounds, the exchange rate is 3 percent. We entered Cuba on a humanitarian visa, issued by the cruise ship for a fee of $75, and enjoyed sharing small gifts with the school children as they were on their way to school.
