CLERK THWARTS WOULD-BE STORE ROBBER

colorado springs» A Colorado Springs convenienc­e store clerk was able to elude a gun-toting robber by locking himself inside the office early Monday morning.

The suspect, who has not been captured, fled when he realized he could not reach the clerk, who barricaded himself in the office.

The would-be robber entered the store in the 300 block of South Hancock Avenue at 3:13 a.m., according to a police report.

When the clerk saw the gunman with a bandana covering most of his face, he barricaded himself in the office and refused to come out. When the alleged robber realized he couldn’t get to the clerk, he fled the store, the police report says.

Horses euthanized after Weld County crash. A

pickup crashed into a horse trailer Monday, and two horses had to be euthanized because of injuries, the Colorado State Patrol said.

Nate Reid, a State Patrol spokesman, said a Ford F-250 pickup traveling east on Colorado 14 near Weld County 89 at 9:42 a.m. Monday swerved into opposing traffic and sideswiped a Chevy pickup pulling a horse trailer.

The Ford pickup then struck the front of the trailer, which was carrying the horses, a camel, llamas and goats. Two horses were euthanized.

The driver of the Ford was taken to North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley with serious injuries but is expected to survive. The other driver wasn’t hurt, Reid said.

La Plata County elk research to stop B

hesperus» As Fort Lewis College prepares to take over 6,300 acres of state land in La Plata County, a controvers­ial elk research operation is moving out.

The Durango Herald reports that Fort Lewis College will take over the state land south of Hesperus starting July 1 and will not extend the lease for ElkQuest, an elk hunting and chronic wasting disease research operation.

Owner Barry Dyar establishe­d the Elk Research Institute in 2003 with the goal of breeding an animal resistant to chronic wasting disease, an illness that causes slow starvation in elk, deer and moose. He has been accused of using the research as a front for an expensive private hunting ground.

Man accidental­ly shoots himself B

colorado springs» A man is facing charges after accidental­ly shooting himself in the leg in a Colorado Springs gas station bathroom.

The Gazette reports that police say 34-year-old Randall Reese Jr. was shot after a handgun discharged in his pocket Friday.

He was treated at a hospital and arrested.

Reese faces charges of unlawfully carrying a concealed weapon and illegal discharge of a firearm.
