Tides win Game 1 in the ECML semis

- Day Staff Reports

Groton — Ben Jerome singled, went to second on a passed ball and came around to score the winning run on a ground ball in the bottom of the ninth as the Tides took a 1-0 lead in their Eastern Connecticut Major League semifinal series against the Pirates, beating the Pirates 1-0 on Monday night.

The second game of the best-of-three series was moved to 5:30 p.m. today due to impending inclement weather.

Jeremy Sagun, the third Tides pitcher of the evening, got the win. Jerome's single was only the team's fourth hit of the game.

There were four double plays, two by each team, which helped force extra innings.

The Pirates' best chance to score came in the top of the eighth, as Justin Daniels led off with a double and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Tim Jackson, but Daniels was left stranded.

Jordan Warecke, the sixth pitcher used by the Pirates, took the loss.

On Tuesday, the Clams and Knights begin the other semifinal series with Game 1 starting at 5:30 p.m. All games are being played at Washington Park.
