St. Bernard girls march on in Class S

Winsted — Lindsey Clement and Sophia Boras each hit a pair of clutch free throws in the final 30 seconds as 20th-seeded St. Bernard upset No. 13 Gilbert 30-28 in the first round of the CIAC Class S girls' basketball tournament on Tuesday night.

The game was tied at 26-26 when Clement hit both ends of a one-andone with 30 seconds left to give the Saints (8-14) the lead. After coming up with a defensive stop, Boras was fourth with eight seconds left and converted another one-and-one to put St. Bernard up four.

Boras finished with 18 points, 13 in the second half, while Clement had eight, six coming in the fourth quarter when St. Bernard scored 14 points.

Up next for the Saints is a second round game at No. 4 Windsor Locks on Friday night. The Raiders defeated No. 29 Metro Learning Center in the first round. In other games: • Sam Gray scored 20 points and had 10 rebounds as No. 8 Old Lyme beat No. 25 Gilbert 46-32 in Class S. The Wildcats host No. 9 Aerospace in a second-round game on Friday. Emily DeRoehn had seven points, eight rebounds, five steals and two blocked shots, Taylor Thompson had seven points, eight rebounds and a block and Gray had three steals and two blocks for Old Lyme (15-8).

• No. 2 Nonnewaug eliminated 47-33 Ledyard in Class MM. Tallie Williams had 21 points, six rebounds and seven steals and Tajeah Winston had 10 rebounds for No. 31 Ledyard (6-17).

College swimming

• Coast Guard Academy will send four men and one woman to the NCAA Division III Championsh­ips on March 18-21 in Greensboro, N.C. The group will be led by senior All-American Joe Rodriguez, who placed third in the 50 freestyle, seventh in the 100 freestyle and was part of the 200 medley relay team which earned All-America honors with an eighth place finish last season.

He will swim both events again and will join juniors Daniel Jenkins, Tyler Dominick and sophomore Devin McClure in three relays — 200 freestyle, 200 medley and 400 medley. McClure will also participat­e in the 200 and 500 freestyles.

On the women's side, Sarah Passilla qualified in the 200 IM with a time school record time of 2:05.41 and will also swim the 400 IM and the 100 freestyle. She earned All-America honors in the 800 freestyle relay with a seventh-place finish last season.

College football

• UConn announced it will play at Ohio State during the 2025 season. The Huskies will travel to Columbus on Oct. 18, 2025 and receive a $1.95 million guarantee. It is a one-game contract and will be the first game between the two programs. Ohio State won the 2019 Big Ten championsh­ip and played in the College Football Playoffs, losing to Clemson 29-23 in the semifinals. UConn will visit Clemson on Nov. 13, 2021.

College hockey

• UConn will participat­e in the inaugural Holiday Face-Off tournament on Dec. 28-29 next season at Fiserv Forum, home of the NBA's Milwaukee Bucks. The Huskies will be joined by Wisconsin, Clarkson and Arizona State, with matchups to be announced.
