Mason finished the 8K course in 25:24.3, only two seconds behind individual champion Sam Brunnette of Plymouth State. Sophomore Danny Ashale also earned All-New England recognitio­n for Conn by placing 13th in 25:45.3. MIT beat Amherst 81-81 for the team title and Conn finished with 218 points. Also for Conn, senior Connor Trapp was 47th (26:21), junior Price Day was 75th (26:48.5) and junior Russell Adam 81st (26:53.7).

• Coast Guard placed 21st with 601 points. The Bears' top finisher was junior Colton Atkinson in 86th place (26:58.1) followed by sophomore Jacob Panning (120th,27:33.6), junior Alex Kearney (123rd, 27:35.9) and sophomore Andre Gallant (136th, 27:52).

College field hockey

• Top-seeded and unbeaten UConn defeated Boston University 3-1 in the second round of the NCAA Division I tournament in Storrs. The Huskies (20-0) will play Penn State, a 2-1 overtime winner of Delaware, in Sunday's quarterfin­als at 2 p.m. Charlotte Veitner scored two goals for UConn while Amanda Collins also scored for the Huskies and added an assist.

H.S. cross country

• Montville junior Mady Whittaker finished 97th out of 258 runners at the New England Championsh­ip meet in Belfast, Maine. The Eastern Connecticu­t Conference champion set a personal best in the 5K with a time of 19:47. She will complete her season on Nov. 26 at the Foot Locker Eastern Regional Championsh­ips at Van Cortland Park in New York. In the boys' race, Ledyard's Zak King overcame a fall at the start of the race and battled back to finish in 126th place in 17:06.

H.S. football

• Valley Regional/Old Lyme outscored Lewis Mills 28-0 in the second half en route to a 35-3 win in Burlington. The Warriors (8-1, 6-1 Sassacus) can qualify for the Class S tournament with a win next week over Haddam-Killingwor­th. Quarterbac­k Michael Cullina was 13 of 19 for 287 yards, three touchdowns and an intercepti­on for Valley/Old Lyme, while Ernest Jean-Pierre hauled in five passes for 109 yards.

• Prince Tech overcame a 12-6 halftime deficit to defeat Thames River 36-20 in the Connecticu­t Technical Conference. The loss snapped the Crusaders' three-game winning streak. Thames River (4-4, 4-4) scored on JoJo Beltran's 80-yard kickoff return, and touchdown runs by Albert Velasquez (31 yards) and Trey Stimson (9 yards). Velasquez also ran for a two-point conversion.

Men’s basketball

• Mass Bay Community outlasted Avery Point 115-112. Tyrel Martinez had 33 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Pointers whle Jacee Hamlin added 26 points and eight assists, Steven Fletcher had 19 points and Nick Fersch had 15 points and 11 rebounds.

Women’s basketball

• Hostos Community College of the Bronx handed Avery Point its first loss, 101-94, in Groton. Mia Brennan led the Pointers (2-1) with 22 points and four assists while Tatyana LaFrance-Boyce added 21 points, Meagan Bianchi had 13 points and 12 assists, Edona Thaqi had 13 points and Egypt Santos finished with 10 points and nine rebounds.
