U.S. marshals combed Dyersburg Monday for signs of former Dyer County judge David W. Lanier, who is wanted after failing to surrender to U.S. marshals Friday as ordered by a federal appeals court. Lanier was free on appeal of his conviction of federal civil rights charges when the Sixth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ordered him back into custody to await a ruling.

50 years ago — 1972

Attorney Leo Bearman Jr. yesterday said pressing legal affairs will prevent him from heading an investigat­ion of complaints against policemen, and Mayor Wyeth Chandler said he has another

person in mind for the job. Mr. Chandler would not name the new candidate for the position he outlined earlier this week.

MUROC ARMY AIR BASE, Calif. – Marine Ace Maj. Marion Carl on Monday slammed the blood-red Douglas Skystreak through shimmering desert air at 650.6 miles an hour to break the world’s air speed record set only five days ago by the Navy.

WASHINGTON – Further reduction of the price of gasoline was forecast today in the preliminar­y report by a special Senate committee investigat­ing the

industry. The committee’s prediction was based on the recent cut in the price of crude oil, which. it was said, might reasonably be expected to reflect itself in the cost to the ultimate consumer of the refined product.

NASHVILLE – About 100 delegates attended the opening sessions of the Sigma Chi Fraternity convention at the Capitol today. Gen. B.P. Runkle presided, and the meeting in the morning was devoted to the examinatio­n of credential­s of the delegates from the various chapters. The afternoon session was also a business meeting, and the rules committee made its report.
