Hopdoddy Burger Bar coming to Overton Square

- TOM BAILEY

An Austin, Texas-born hamburgerand-beer chain called Hopdoddy Burger Bar will go into the building now inhabited by Yolo in Overton Square.

Loeb Properties revealed on Monday the new tenant for the building, which the landlord had previously said will be expanded, renovated and given a new look.

Construction is to start this month and Hopdoddy will open in the fall at 6 S. Cooper, according to Loeb Properties.

The building anchoring the southeast corner of Madison and Cooper also houses a Lenny’s Sub Shop, which was to stay.

The Loeb statement says Hopdoddy grinds its meat daily and offers Angus beef, Akaushi beef, chicken and “sushigrade tuna that are stacked between baked-from-scratch buns.”

The 7-year-old chain also serves french fries, salads, milkshakes and local craft beers on tap and in cans and bottles, and offers a full bar. In addition to Texas, Arizona, Colorado and California also have Hopdoddy restaurants.

In its current form, the building at 6 S. Cooper may be the dullest looking structure among the stock of charming, nearly century-old Overton Square buildings. Loeb Properties last summer confirmed its plans to redesign and expand the building.

Loeb did not renew the lease for Yolo, which, according to the shop’s owners last summer, would be moved several blocks west to 1906 Madison, across from Huey’s. That building most recently housed the National Association of Credit Management.

Yolo has operated in the Square since March 2011.

The architectural firm brg3s has designed the renovation for 6 S. Cooper where Hopdoddy is going. An early rendering shows a more modern appearance with high-design elements that include a rooftop patio.
