Exhibition shows heart for others

WKNO displays artwork with focus on charity

Art enthusiasts from across the Mid-south are invited to attend one of the most creative art exhibitions to be presented by a local artist from the Memphis community.

“Art with a Heart for Others” is more than a catchy theme — it describes the January exhibition of more than 50 original artistic creations by artist and philanthropist Mary Lawrence Allen.

Allen, a native Memphian whose artistic creations are known throughout the region, was educated at Vanderbilt University. Her artwork is currently on display in the new WKNO Digital Media Center at 7151 Cherry Farms Road in Cordova through Feb. 29, weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“Art with a Heart for Others” is the theme that depicts Allen’s philanthropic efforts to support such local charities as Families Matter, HER Faith Ministries, Lovebuilders and Younglives, all local charities that will benefit from proceeds from the art exhibition.

The public is invited and encouraged to see and support this phenomenal artistic display by choosing a favorite painting to purchase and take home.

Allen’s artwork hangs in many public places such as The Peabody,

Regions Bank headquarters, Sovereign Wealth Management Inc., Triumph Bank, Insouth Bank, Holiday Inn Select locations and at Vanderbilt University.

“Art is like a symphony of color with the flow of pigments and light moving across the surface in either abstract narratives or more realistic portrayals,” Allen said.

She uses acrylic pigments on paper, canvas, aluminum and plexiglass and creates an exhibit of varied subjects that have a glow of luminosity and transparency. Her work features silhouetted tree forms, circles, spirals and swirls which express symbols.

Faith is the focus of Allen’s work and her pieces speak of her life with both challenges and celebration.

This art exhibition is an initiative of a consortium of ministry leaders concerned with assisting needy and under-served families and with building strong family relationships.
