Berggren, M.D., Ronald B.
Ronald B. Berggren, M.D., a longtime resident of
Columbus, died on May 22, 2022, in Norwalk,
CT. He was 90 years old.
Born and raised on Staten
Island, NY, he was the son of Bernard C. and Florence
M. Berggren. He was a graduate of Port Richmond
High School, Johns Hopkins
University, and the University
of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He completed residencies in both General
Surgery and Plastic Surgery at the Hospital of the University
of Pennsylvania before accepting the position of Director of the Division of
Plastic Surgery at The Ohio
State University in 1965, where he was a Professor
Emeritus of Surgery and an
Honorary Staff Member at the time of his death. He was also the Director of the
Division of Plastic Surgery at Children’s Hospital in Columbus
and Emeritus Staff of the Honorary Staff at Riverside
Methodist Hospital.
He served as President of the American Association of
Plastic Surgeons and was
Chairman of the American
Board of Plastic Surgery. He was also Chairman of the
Plastic Surgery Research
Council, President of the
Plastic Surgical Education
Foundation and Chair of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education
(ACGME). Among his many awards, he received an Honorary citation from the American Society of
Plastic Surgeons, a Distinguished
Service Award from the Plastic Surgery Educational
Foundation, the John
Gienapp award from the
ACGME and was named a distinguished Fellow of the
American Association of
Plastic Surgeons. A lifelong outdoorsman, he was an
Eagle Scout, an equestrian, and loved to be on the water enjoyed many happy years with family and friends at the home he and his wife
Mary Beth built overlooking
Hoover Reservoir. He was predeceased by his wife of sixty-six years, Mary Beth
Griffith Berggren, in 2021.
He is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Karen and
Clark Murray of New Canaan,
CT; son and daughter-in-law, Eric and Deborah
Berggren of Chicago, IL; grandchildren, Clark Murray,
Jr. (Mary) of Charlottesville,
VA, Allison Berggren of
Chicago, IL, Caroline Murray of Stockholm, Sweden and
John Berggren (Elizabeth) of Miami, FL. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the
