Sunday, Aug. 22

The Walker County Historical Society meeting Sunday, Aug. 22, at 3 p.m. will be an outdoor meeting at the John Ross House in Rossville to see the new Ecobox and improvemen­ts to the Duck Pond area. Susan Wells will discuss the process of conceptual­izing, designing and placing the Ecobox, which has oral recordings of the history of the Ross family, the house and the area. Bring a folding chair. The Elizabeth Terrace Baptist Church, 600 Mohawk St., Rossville, will host its 78th anniversar­y and homecoming Sunday, August 22, at 10:30 a.m. Evangelist Jerry Atkins will preach with special music by Barry Rowland & Deliveranc­e. American Legion LaFayette Post 339’s second annual Veterans Legacy Golf Tournament is Saturday, Aug. 28. Registrati­on is at 8 a.m. and tee-off is at 9 a.m. The deadline to register is Aug. 15. The Tri-state Military Vehicle Club’s annual Vehicle Show and Swap Meet will be held at Camp Jordan Park in East Ridge, Tenn., on Saturday, Sept. 4, from 8 a.m. to dark, and Sunday, Sept. 5, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The show is free to attend, with military vehicles from WWII to modern-day on display, and club members on hand to show off their prized vehicles and displays. The public is invited to rent a space at the swap meet to sell or trade military items and vehicle parts. No yard sale items allowed. The cost is $25 and can be paid the day of by cash or check.

The community is invited to attend the fourth annual Butterfly Festival on Saturday, Sept. 4, at Heritage High School at 3960 Poplar Springs Road in Ringgold from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The first Butterfly Festival took place Sept. 2, 2017, as a way to raise money for two scholarshi­p funds dedicated to the memory of 18-year-old Katie Beth Carter of Ringgold. Katie was killed in an automobile accident on her way from home, back to college at Jacksonvil­le State University (JSU) in Alabama, on Labor Day in 2016. At this year’s Butterfly Festival there will be live music, local vendors, fun and games for the whole family, as well as a special butterfly release at the end of the event. The cost is $10 per person, with a $50 maximum per family. Children under age 3 are free. All proceeds will benefit the Katie Beth Carter Scholarshi­p Fund and the ongoing work of Live & Love Ministries locally and globally. Over the last four years, Live & Love has provided meals for local families in need, provided Christmas presents for local families in need, supported multiple missionari­es, helped provide water to the school campus named after Katie Beth in Nicaragua, provided scholarshi­ps to students at Jacksonvil­le State University and Heritage High School, and hosted the community Butterfly Festival event. Walker County’s 2021 Labor Day Car and Motorcycle Show, which will benefit the Al Millard Memorial Stocking Full of Love, will be Monday, Sept. 6, at the Walker County Civic Center at 10052 U.S. 27, Rock Spring. The event will include food vendors. Show categories include Top 5 Street Rods, Top 5 Street Machines, Top 3 Original 50’s, Top 3 Original 60’s, Top 3 Original 70’s, Top 3 Original 80’s, Top Original 90’s and up, Top Original 49 and back, Top Modified Truck, Top 4x4 Truck, Top Foreign and Rattiest Rod; special awards include Best of Show, Best Ford, Best GM, Best Mopar, Best Club Participat­ion and Top 2 Motorcycle. The fourth annual Smith & Wesley and Friends New Country 107.9 Benefit Concert presented by the Smith Charitable Endowment is Saturday, Sept. 25, at 7 p.m. at the Northwest Georgia Amphitheat­er at Benton Place, 220 Catoosa Circle in Ringgold.
