Lyerly United Methodist festival set for Aug. 10
Andrew Roden’s dad says he’s been feeding hummingbirds for years and loves sitting on his deck watching them. He offers his tips on feeding hummingbirds:
You don’t have to buy an expensive feeder. The $4 cheapest feeders work fine.
You want something that’s easy to clean.
Keep some space between feeders. The birds will fuss and fight with each other if you don’t.
Keep feeders clean. Change the water at least once a week.
Buy an ant guard for the feeders.
Recipe for sugar water for feeders: Use four parts water to one part sugar (no added colors). Bring water to a boil then add sugar. Stir it in good and let it come to a boil again. Remove from stove and let it cool before putting it in the feeder.
Hummers are not scared of anything and can be trained to sit on your hand and fingers to drink.
They hummingbirds will leave sometime in September, so enjoy them while they’re here.
Pony rides, miniature train rides, and knocker-ball for the kids this year will be among the attractions at Lyerly United Methodist Church’s 11th annual Car, Truck, Motorcycle Show and Craft Festival.
