Man City, Real Madrid into UCL quarterfinals
Manchester City continued its pursuit of back-toback Champions League titles by advancing to the quarterfinals of European club soccer’s elite competition with a 3-1 win over Copenhagen on Wednesday.
Goals from Manuel Akanji, Julian Alvarez and Erling Haaland at Etihad Stadium saw City complete a 6-2 aggregate win.
It’s the seventh straight season Pep Guardiola’s team has advanced to the quarterfinals and this latest victory extended an unbeaten home run in the Champions League that stretches back 30 games to 2018.
A repeat of last season’s treble is still on, with City a point behind first-place Liverpool in the Premier League and into the quarterfinals of the FA Cup.
In Wednesday’s other second leg, host Real Madrid played to a 1-1 draw with Leipzig to make the quarterfinals for the fourth straight season. The Spanish club advanced 2-1 on aggregate.
Madrid’s victory came on a day in which coach Carlo Ancelotti was accused of tax fraud by Spanish tax authorities.
Man City and Madrid joined Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich in the quarterfinals. Those two clubs advanced Tuesday. There are four more second legs left to play.
