After 41 years in business, Quincy restaurant la paloma is closing. the mexican spot, which served countless margaritas and fajitas over the years, will mark its last day June 29. owners michael Walsh and Stephen Dwyer are retiring to spend more time with their families.

“We have made a lot of great connections, memories and friends along the way through good times and bad. michael and Stephen would like to thank our staff for their dedication and hard work throughout the years,” read a message on the restaurant’s facebook page. “thank you all for your years of support and encouragement.”

la paloma is known for its friendly atmosphere, attentive staff, reasonable prices, and vast menu of enchiladas, tacos, burritos, and other tex-mex dishes. customers could eat all of the above by ordering one of the generous combination platters, which never broke the $20 mark. Weekly events such as taco tuesday and fajita frenzy added to the festive feeling, along with more than a dozen margarita varieties.

to the many people who ate and worked there over the years, la paloma was more than a restaurant. “it was family,” says Jessica tragellis (née ketner), who became a waitress there in 2011 as a college freshman and worked there until this year. She is now a math teacher at Weymouth high School. “my parents had been going since it opened. my mom ate there before i was born and it was her first meal out after i was born. You could say i was born into the la paloma family. my family and i would go out to eat every Saturday night at la paloma.” (her regular order: the shredded beef flautas.)

“over the years working there, i have met some of the best people who have become some of my greatest friends,” tragellis says. “the love and passion that everyone put into the restaurant was evident.”
