Huffman sentence: Actress Felicity Huffman reported Tuesday to a U.S. prison in California to begin serving a two-week sentence in a college admissions scandal, a representa­tive said. Huffman pleaded guilty in May to fraud and conspiracy for paying an admissions consultant $15,000 to have a proctor correct her daughter’s SAT answers. She was also fined $30,000.

Notre Dame fire: Scaffoldin­g that has remained atop Notre Dame Cathedral since a fire in April will be removed “in the coming weeks” to allow restoratio­n work to begin next year, France’s culture minister said Tuesday. The medieval Paris structure was under renovation at the time of the fire.

Building collapse: A sevenstory building collapsed Tuesday in Fortaleza, Brazil, killing one person. Nine people were said to be missing, though it was unclear if they were under the rubble or just unreachabl­e by relatives and friends. Some of those trapped were communicat­ing with family by cellphone, officials said. Ten survivors have been found.

Japan typhoon: The toll of death and destructio­n from a typhoon that tore through central and northern Japan climbed Tuesday, as the government said it was considerin­g approving a special budget for the disaster response and eventual reconstruc­tion. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told a parliament­ary session that the number of deaths tied to Typhoon Hagibis was at 53 and expected to rise, as at least another nine people are presumed dead.
