THE HOT CORNER

-

1 BLUE JAYS: Toronto traded veteran utilityman Eric Sogard across the diamond Sunday, sending him to the visiting Tampa Bay Rays. Toronto is expected to receive a minor leaguer for Sogard, who’s having a career season (.300, 10 homers, 30 RBIs in 73 games). Sogard, 33, was due to start in right field but was scratched shortly before first pitch. The trade was confirmed in the second inning.

2 TWINS: Reliever Sergio Romo moved from the bottom of the NL East into a pennant race with Minnesota. Romo joined the Twins in Chicago after he was acquired in a trade with Miami late Saturday.

3 INDIANS: Pitcher Trevor Bauer suddenly heaved the ball from just past the mound over the centerfield wall Sunday while being taken out of a game vs. Kansas City. He was obviously upset, although it wasn’t clear whether he was mad at his performance or that manager Terry Francona was pulling him. The 2018 All-Star had just allowed a two-run single that gave the Royals a 7-5 lead in the fifth inning. When Francona emerged from the dugout, Bauer turned, took a couple of steps and fired. As Francona reached the mound, he and Bauer appeared to exchange words. Francona followed Bauer into the dugout and both disappeared into the tunnel. They reappeared in the dugout later in the inning, separate but both apparently fuming. Bauer allowed eight runs on nine hits in 41/3 innings.

4 CARDINALS: Paul Goldschmidt’s team record-tying streak of six straight games with a homer ended in a 6-2 loss to Houston on Sunday. He singled in five at-bats.

5 WHITE SOX: Eloy Jimenez was activated from the 10-day injured list. The rookie outfielder will be limited to designated hitter while he completes a throwing program after he was sidelined with a bruised ulnar nerve in his right arm.
