Tech trying to address inconsistency in colors for uniforms, apparel.

After several weeks of working with new apparel partner Adidas, the Georgia Tech athletic department has landed on the shade of gold that it will use for apparel and uniforms.

“I think it’s been chosen,” Athletic Director Todd Stansbury said in a recent interview with the AJC.

Many Tech fans have lamented the inconsistency in the gold and yellow that are used in uniforms and apparel. One of the non-white uniforms that the men’s basketball team wears, for instance, is a yellowish gold, while the women’s team wears a uniform that is closer to old gold. The football team’s uniform pants can appear between yellow and gold depending on the light.

It is an added challenge to Tech’s search for its one gold that different colors and shades appear differently depending on material (i.e., helmet vs. jersey) and lighting. “And that’s what makes it difficult, because, I think for the most part, most Georgia Tech people say we want to match it up or it should be somewhere in the realm of golds associated with the Ramblin’ Wreck, but it’s not that easy,” Stansbury said in October.

In August, when Tech’s new apparel partnership with Adidas was announced, Stansbury said the athletic department and company were considering between 20 and 30 shades of gold. By October, it had been reduced to four.

Stansbury declined to identify the new Tech gold. It will be introduced in the spring, along with other elements of the athletic department’s new branding with Adidas. He said the new Adidas-designed football uniforms are already being produced.

Tech apparel produced by Adidas will go on the market July 1.
