Giants acquire Rangers’ Dyson
Former Texas closer was just designated for assignment.
Reliever Sam Dyson was traded to the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday night, less than a week after he was designated for assignment by the Texas Rangers.
Dyson is going to the Giants for a player to be named or cash, and Texas will pay the Giants $1.5 million to cover a portion of the approximately $2.25 million remaining of his $3.52 million salary this season.
Dyson was the Rangers’ closer last season when they won their second consecutive AL West title. He also was a key reliever for Team USA when it won the World Baseball Classic in March, tossing six scoreless innings over five appearances.
But he lost his closer role in Texas after he blew his first three save opportunities two weeks into the season. Dyson, who had 38 saves last season, was 1-6 with a 10.80 ERA and blew all four of his save opportunities for Texas this year.
Reds: Scooter Gennett tied a major league record with four homers — becoming the 17th player to accomplish the feat, and the first Reds player to do it — and matched the club mark with 10 RBIs in Tuesday’s 13-1 win over the Cardinals. Gennett’s 17 total bases also were a team record. The 5-foot10, 185-pound infielder/outfielder was claimed off waivers from Milwaukee late in spring training. On Wednesday, Gennett’s cleats, pants, jersey and hat from the game were all headed to Cooperstown and the Hall of Fame.
Mariners: Shortstop Jean Segura agreed to a $70 million, five-year contract covering 2018-22. Segura, who leads the AL with a .341 average, is making $6.2 million this year and would have been eligible for free agency following the 2018 season.
Indians: Right-hander Danny Salazar (right shoulder soreness) was placed on the 10-day disabled list.
Brewers: Right-hander Matt Garza was placed on the 10-day DL with a chest contusion. Garza collided with first baseman Jesus Aguilar on a play at first Saturday.
Padres: Right-hander Jarred Cosart was placed on the 10-day DL with a strained right elbow.
Pirates: Catcher Francisco Cervelli, who took a foul ball off his face mask Tuesday, was put on the seven-day concussion disabled list.
Phillies: Hector Neris is out as the closer and Pat Neshek will take over in the ninth inning, manager Pete Mackanin said.
